How Cuba survived when the oil stopped flowing

Many people are seeing Cuba’s response to its oil embargo as a lesson we need to learn from.

What happened was that people began growing things everywhere and anywhere. They made raised beds on rooftops, in parking bays, just anywhere they could and they began to think ‘permaculture’. Feeling the pressure on resources they were forced to develop systems that would work without fertilisers, insecticides and all the host of artificial interventions of modern agriculture. And they survived.
