Encounter with a Polar bear in Bristol

Don’t worry about global-warming,
or what the papers say,
There are Polar bears in Bristol,
I saw one out today
It was near to the museum
and I’d just like to say
His presence was unwelcome
I had to drive away!
I thought at first, how lovely,
a real dancing bear!
But he was more like a refugee,
a little in bad taste!
And as if announcement were needed
And what a testament to waste!
A man gave out some leaflets
To say the Polar Bear was here!
Isn’t it amazing the way they can adapt?
Must be they want the jobs,
that’s why they are over here,
But don’t worry about the environment.
The evidence is clear.
There are Polar bears in Bristol
So there’s no problem here.
Well, I plucked up the courage,
but he wouldn’t talk to me.
I wanted his opinion
on some subjects,
there were three:
Why did he need to walk the streets?
why spoil my shopping spree?
Wasn’t the world big enough
to keep him away from me?
Fur is so un p.c.
-I couldn’t tell him to his face
But he wouldn’t talk politics
so I said I’d put him in his place!
He said he would prefer that,
but he feared ‘his place’ was melting
I said progress, sacrifices must be made
and he ought to hand that pelt in!
The bear simply looked south
with a wet-look in his eye
And said, if his world had to go,
so would ours begin to die.

I looked at streets and houses
At flowers and trees and plants,
At cars ,C.D’ s, computers;
Things of the city in a glance.
I thought of those around me
Of birth and life and death;
Of everything in cycle
All that grows, and that has breath,
I asked him ‘what do you want from me?’
He growled ‘that you take less’
‘I want the world to thrive’ I said
‘But I keep on taking more’
‘It’s only in an effort’ I said,
‘to keep the bear from the door’
Whoops!
The bear threw back his head
and opened wide his jaw
Not in a roar ,but in a yawn
‘Observe the bears of the field’ he said
‘your account is overdrawn!’
