How does EarthAbbey work

The heart of the community is the life of the individual members and their annual reflection on their lives. This results in offers of help, and requests for help, from other members. Some of our members have particular projects that they are developing where the vision, skills, experience and labour of other members would be of value. Some people may need paying for the services that they offer to other members. That is OK and members should state what they need. We recognise the need to make livings, but we hope that many will also be able to offer some things on a voluntary, or mutual sharing, basis.

Some others may have particular ideas about how EarthAbbey might express its life and seek others to help them make that real, perhaps running a retreat or developing some devotional resources. Some may be willing to offer help with editing the public side of our website, which will become like our magazine, with inspirational content provided by members and publicity for members projects.

We encourage members to share the story of their own projects. Private needs and struggles can be shared among members in the Cloister, while public announcements and story can be submitted to the ‘magazine’, or public part of the website. Members provide text and pictures for the ‘magazine’ and then an editor will shape it up and post it.

Some members will also form local Way of Life groups to encourage them on their journey. These are small groups of 4-6 people who meet in a home every other month for a period of 3 - 4 hours. At the meeting, each person in turn is given space to share reflections and goals on their Way of Life and the group responds, as in the action/learning model, with questions, but not comments, on what has been said.  The group may also share food, and some devotional time if the members want that. The commitment to the group is for one year. Then it should be renegotiated.
