Wiki Home What is a prophetic community
We draw our understanding of a prophetic community from the ideas of Walter Brueggemann in his book The Prophetic Imagination. This includes the insight that Jesus understood his own life and mission to be the fulfilment of the work of the prophets like Amos, Isaiah and Jeremiah.
These people shared a concern that the society of their day was about to undergo a traumatic and deep transition.
They were willing to face this, confront what was wrong, seek divine wisdom, enter into the grief of the poorest and even bear suffering themselves for the sake of living an authentic life. In doing this, says Brueggemann, they opened up a space for the re-imagination of society.
There is more than one way to understand the story of Jesus, but if Jesus is a prophet and the divine fulfilment of the prophetic hope, then one way to conceive the community of Jesus is as a prophetic community, present outside the political, social and religious establishment and seeking to establish new ways of thinking and new ways of living. EarthAbbey aspires to be such a prophetic community.
