Why the Abbey word in EarthAbbey

EarthAbbey understands itself to be a neo-monastic community.

We share with traditional monastic orders a sense of being drawn together around a common purpose to which we make a commitment.

We recognise some similarities with early Celtic missionaries who had a deep, creation inspired spirituality, lived in touch with the earth, and drew communities around them.

Yet we are different in the sense that we will not embrace the traditional monastic vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, nor impose a detailed rule of life, nor develop rigid hierarchies of leadership.
